I agree Typo 3 is used by the ones who think they know, is so unfriendly for the user and causes so many headaches that is not worth even looking at it. I have a website that a programer did in Typo 3, and I still have problems finding one simple thing in changing a pic on one page. Got to do so many things just for one pic.
It cost me too much money, I hired another person to do my changes, and he quit after 2 weeks in the system.
Tell me about when someone who "believes" to know PHP hacks the already stupid typo3's code: Welcome to spaghetti code fest!
PS: I know you Light, I will tell HER about this blog ;-)
I hate typo3 because the documention is terrible, the code is old, the extensions are impossible.
I confirm is a spaghetti code festival, altough not from Germany but from Denamrk.
Yes, Typo3 documentation and help is useless and typo3 programmers believe that they are genius, but they are each one of them a bunch of dumbs...
Conclusion you better use Dupral or another CMS because typo3 lacks in design and ergonomy... It just sucks.. drupal is better than typo3 and if you don´t want to use drupal you better program your site in php with a framework.
Hi my friends, let´s take a look at this.. it is so funny.. taken from the typo3 blog.
-------------------------------
So does this mean TYPO3 was flawed and buggy? Absolutely no. Bugs, yeah like in any product of that size. The site Ohloh says TYPO3 is 2.7 millions lines if you add Trunk, typo3xdev and 5.0 work. How can you expect this much code to be error free ?
------------
2.7 millions lines... lol that is insane... so many lines of code for that punny cms at least let´s see what they had improved for the new version of this stupid CMS.
--------
# he new “Start in module” which give you the possibility to get directly to pagetree (Web-> Page) instead of the boring “About modules” from the past.
# The capacity to replace any BE label using TS instead of playing with LLXML and risking overwriting a file.
# Lots of new icons. Still not perfect but we must keep some work for 4.3…
# The disappearing of icons for the main modules (Web, Files, User Tools, etc).
# The disappearing of Doc Module that no one knew what it was… ;)
---------------
WTF????? Is that the best that all the dumb typo3 comunity could do in more than one year???? Please don´t get me wrong.. this blog was created with the purpose of keeping anyone very far from typo3, I´m just warning the world about this cancer called typo3 please never use it.
Thanks.
Haha Light, it seems like you are the dumb one, personal attacks on the community that you don't seem to know very much of is useless. TYPO3 is a very mature CMS, and that's the simple reason for the messy code. This is being addressed with the development of TYPO3 v5, where the codebase is completely rewritten, taking advantage of the newer versions of PHP.
I have played with other content management systems, and I haven't found one that could compare to the versatility of TYPO3. When I used Joomla I got very frustrated that even fairly simple things required core hacks.
TYPO3 can do almost anything for those who know the system. Those who refuse to learn it, because they want everything served on a silver platter, should - as you suggest - use another CMS.
If you want to keep people from using TYPO3, you better provide a lot better arguments than personal attacks. Even the most mentally challenged person can do personal attacks, but that doesn't mean that they are right...
You should re-read the post.
"My personal smaller favourites". You see? The non-obvious ones. What part of "smaller" don't you get ?
Some of the major ones are in http://typo3.org/development/articles/release-notes-42
Great to see people attacking a free CMS no one is forced to use...
Don't use a 747 to do your shopping.
you have no idea how much i HATE typo3 since i *have to* work with it for the past month...................bad interface, terrible documentations, and buggy import..and please don't get me start about the confusing way of using template Typoscript....if i had a choice i'd rather use something like drupal
oh i forgot to say, the only way you can keep people from using it is...make it really hard to use....for those who doesn't have a choice will still using
i know people are using only b/c of it is free and powerful, not because they have usable interface or easy to learn
and even typo3's HCI wiki has better interface design information architecture
Oh.
Pensavo di essere il solo ad odiare questa merda di cms. Creato unicamente per complicare la vita a chi decide di usarlo.
I think i was alone to hate typo3. A Cms created for get our life crazy since you start using it.
what a shit of pi_ty_tt_tx_p1_tt_news_pid_uid FUCK YOU TYPO3
Hi guys, a long time since the last post... Thanks to God and thanks to live I found another job and now I'll never have to use this stupid useless shit called typo3 :) I'll no longer have to use this unsecure system with so many restrictions and no flexibility in design and functionality. Thanks for your support to all of you guys on this frustration and keep posting your frustration about this stupid system, I'll be glad to read all of them...
Light ;)
I forgot to say this: TYPO3 content managment system really SUCKS!
Every few months the rich text editor in one of my Typo3 installations stops working. I get mail from clients asking me to fix this shit. When I try to install an extension it says "file is empty" even if that's not true at all. Basically whatever I try to do in TypoFucking3 returns either a) an error message b) nothing or c) something unexpected. It randomly stops working correctly and when you google a problem for Typo3 you find hundreds of forum entries with thousands of suggestions like delete this and this file from this and this directory, than edit this constant and update your local/ext/sysext but not your global/bla/temp/bullshit and replace the bla.js file here and there and people say "I tried all that but it didn't work" and then there's no more answer.
I hate this stupid fucking shit of an asshole CMS and curse the day I installed it. Fuck off and die Typo3
I'm a Typo3 professional!
I use Typo3 because no other open source can as much as typo3. Commerce, bookingsystems everything is possible. The most dutch companies, even the government and the radio- and tv-stations use Typo3 as CMS. Because it's very flexible.
So stop this fucking shit about Typo3!!!
Are even blogs about:
I hate Mambo, I hate Joomla...
Well if dumb people from Germany likes to use it good for them I know most of those people feel the same like us.
Typo3 may be good for small sites and must not be used for on line systems, it will mess your life.
I inherited an old project with old TYPO3 code (3.8 something) and was horrified at the poor quality of code I saw and simply had to take a look if the newest version was any better. Superficially the code is a lot cleaner, but other than that it's mostly a totally useless collection of wrappers which do not add value or ease of use to the original PHP classes and methods.
Don't bother with TYPO3.
I agree; instead of spending time working on your site, you waste most of it trying to figure out how to remove all the excess garbage tags typo3 stuffs into the code; what a waste of time
Unless you're completely retarded and unable to read, TYPO3 is not difficult to install or get started with. The templating mechanisms shit all over anything in Drupal or Joomla. Community plugin choice is amazing, and it takes about 30 mins to get a basic plugin up and running if you know a bit of PHP.
'Light' - I think you waste spend less time playing with yourself / writing pointless rants
Typo3 es una porquería, para hacer una simple tontera tienes que demorarte como unos 10 pasos, en definitiva es una mierda y todos los que defienden.
Typo3 is a waste of time and money (programmer wages that is). If you want to just use the default stuff it provides and the already made extensions, which is fine for a small site, its alright because you don't have to dive into the development aspect. But the time it takes you to figure out the "proper" way to develop extensions for typo3 so that you aren't limited by the already badly written extensions you could develop your own CMS with streamline functionality and usability.
If the word typo3 comes up at the next restructuring meeting for your company's website, be sure to stop it from becoming your biggest nightmare.
Typo3 is the WORST PIECE OF SHIT EVER MADE. DUMBASS "PROGRAMMERS". YO DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WRITING CODE! YOU DESTROYED THE WEB WITH YOUR SHITTY "PRODUCT"! USING TYPO3 IS LIKE WORSHIPPING HITLER.
DEVELOPERS AGAINST BULLSHIT WEB APPLICATIONS UNITE!
AND FUCK YOU KASPER!
I'm currently developing a typo3 extension.
They try to create an object oriented environment without using the proper PHP object oriented features/concepts (Singleton, interface, abstract class etc.). Everything is stored in funny arrays and hash tables. Even the venerable SQL has been typo3shed.
Common computer syntaxes such as < = and all have a totally different meaning in typoscript.
They use acronyms ad nauseum. Variable names aren't meaningful at all. .
To create the most basic "hello world" extension you need dozens of configuration and variables. There is no way you could create it without their kickstarter.
The other terrificant side of TYPO3 is how this stupid cms (developed by a stupid catholic developer - fuck you kasper, maybe you'd try to learn web coding) is how it renders the HTML code. For example, to float an image to left it uses 5 (FIVE!) HTML elements with 5 (FIVE!) CSS classes.
I've a question for the "TYPO3 PROFESSIONALS" (WTF?). What to you great & professionals developer think about this?
omg i hate this... nad work with typo3 las time;/
anyone saying typo3 is rubbish is either: -plain dumb - jealous of people who made it work - or just hating on the fact that kasper is religious. i used it for a couple of large (+600 pages multilanguage) corporate sites. two of them are running non-stop for more than 5 years now, had no problems whatsoever. also the clients are very pleased with the very extensive set of tools and workflows.
of course, it takes a well-built template to make a good website.
maybe its time for you drupal nerds to start reading a few books and learn to develop. the better things in life usually don't come to you by clicking your way through some simple wizards.
being flemish, i apologise for any spelling mistakes.
"i used it for bla bla bla" - "people are jealous" and "bla bla bla bla"....you are saying something you don't konw. Everyone i know who worked with TYPO3 had problems. Most of extension (including the most used, tt_news) has got bug and insecure issues, now also the frontend login got a session fixation vuln, the way TYPO3 renders html and names the classes of html elements is very useless, anti-human and is full of useless tag. To make the simplest extension you've to use Kickstarter and Flexform. But you're a great developer, i know. You didn't get any problem. auhauhauhauahuaha
I do believe typo3 is quite powerful but come on. Once you leave typoscript and you land into their php code...This is a nightmare. Spaghetti code at its finest.
There are billions of functions reinventing the wheel. See for example their "sql_wrappers". What's the point to wrap such a basic and well understood language?
You end up with fragmented queries. Elements are artificially separated. It becomes almost harder to make queries especially while you use "AS" "JOIN" "AGAINST" and so on.
Or I don't know...I'm currently fighting with their typoLink function. Again dozens of different parameters stored into an ugly hash table. Why not using a real object instead of such an ugly $conf hash table.
They use their own slag mm_query, irre query...Things you have never heard of...And after 20 pages of kabalistic/cryptic/ documentations you finally recognize a thing you know for 10 years.
It looks like Typo3 is a strange procedural/object oriented framework. You can't grasp its inner logic...You feel like there is no logic at all.
When they use Methods and classes, you never receive any kind of exception (error). They never strong typed their parameters.
When you come from environment like Java Tomcat and other well designed object oriented framework, you do feel that Typo3 has been developed by a bunch of great and dynamic people, "but" some didn't take their time first to document themselves on the industry best practices and common coding standard. They rush into a coding frenzy.
I guess they understood they mistake and that's why they are busy developing Flow3 which looks quite promising.
Anyway sure you can't complain, there are all volunteers basically, and I haven't found yet a PHP CMS as flexible as Typo3. But a large part of its inner complexity is "useless" and it drives you nuts.
"It looks like Typo3 is a strange procedural/object oriented framework. You can't grasp its inner logic...You feel like there is no logic at all.".
These words are saints.
Surprise, another Typo3 hater; I inherited company website using typo3. I find typo3 to be very restrictive, based on my experience with templates.
Sadly, our business is small, and does not need typo3. Alas, it's here to stay.
I'd like to send out a f*** you to the austrian kid who set up and tossed me this flaming bag of shite.
too many layers of abstraction!
how many ways does one need to change the style of a div?
this is true down to the level of the underlying code itself, as others have already mentioned: take a look at the t3lib classes -- for instance, try to figure out how markup is sent from the RTE to the database --- and tell me how many Advil you need to keep the pain out of your head.
also, TypoScript:
there is no rhyme or reason to it. just join the Cult, drink the Kool-Aid, and please do not ask why we need a separate "language" to modify behavior of PHP spaghetti-code.
Typoscript was invented to hide the skeletons in TYPO3's code house of horrors. it keeps us from looking inside, and encourages dummies to mash the keyboard until something works, rather than dive into and improve the codebase.
creating clear, extendable classes eliminates the need for a configuration syntax so convoluted it appears to be a "language" of its own.
the yarn in this quilt is so tangled, it must be thrown away so we can start over with FLOW3, which will save us all! LOL. while it may be a clear improvement, is it really better than the other MVC-frameworks out there? again i ask, why?
why are we still writing spaghetti-code in PHP, folks? in 2009, there are other, better options! (ahem, ruby, python...)
i could go on forever... but i need to get back to T3, since it takes all day to get anything done. thanks for setting this page up for us to vent. ;)
TYPO3 is an enterprise level CMS, you will need a professional to build a website. The learning curve is steep but worths the effort. Once you learn it, you will never look at another CMS.
You guys are frustrated this happens to newbies in TYPO3 because it is hard to learn the inner workings of this CMS. I was once like you, but i never gave up and i tamed the beast.
I guess after all you don't need TYPO3, you can just go back to your toy CMS's and build sites for 10-20 people.
Oh the pain and suffering... nothing is worth the unpaid horrible time I have spent on typo3.
Please stay away...
Typo3 "learning curve" is actually a brick wall. Use Drupal.
yes, like laci said, you guys are just frustrated cause you can't grasp how the system works. once you understand it, everything is done easily and fast.
comparing typo3 to anything else is like comparing magento with oscommerce, for example. and trust me, oscommerce suxs. magento has a steep learning curve too, but it's worth the effort.
So my suggestion to uz guys. Start learning PHP and start learning a mature system, or else get back to your joomla systems or other crappy small cms systems. or get another job, cause programming is not for you ;)
I happen to have to create a website with typo3 and I must say: I have never ever seen such a user-unfriendly, needlessly complex, and unflexible CMS in my entire life.
Boy is this a pile of crap!
All php-based cms are pieces of shit. Joomla, drupal, typo3. They all suck. Php is a very good toy, when you are 13 years old. If you want to make "web developing" you should learn something better, like Python.
I followed a Typo3 course. Too much info in too little time. Impossible to really understand, or remember. As a result, I hated Typo3, and didn't want to work with it, but had no choice in the matter.
After working with it for a long time, some decisions were made that make the whole experience of working with Typo3 even worse. I had no idea that working with Typo3 could be more excruciatingly unpleasant than it was, that it could get any worse, but it can ! and it will !
Typo3 is a bottomless pit of pain from hell.
I have to work with this shit right now and I HATE IT. Some fucking idiot made this "scripting"-NIGHTMARE just to piss off ordinary programmers like you and me.
F U C K
T Y P O S C R I P T
And I'm sure if a god really exists, he'll beat the hell out of all creators of this piece of shit.
AND FIX THE GOD DAMN EXTENSION REPOSITORY YOU MORONS
Before you introduce Typo3 somewhere, programmers can have lots of problems, after Typo3, they have only one.
My boss has asked me to look in to typo 3 and it's driving me mad. Every extension I try to install has a bug in it and the documentation is incomprehensible. I want to like it, I really do, but I have never felt so at sea with a software product.
Is Drupal any better anyone?
And I forgot to say - the guys who answer the questions on the tech list are smug and arrogant. I really do hate typo3.
Spaghetti with magic mushrooms sause, say no more!
no cant help it, have to say more:
and why couldnt they make typoscript a bit more unambigous, come on:
some.variable = hello -> sets value to "hello"
some.variable = someothervariable -> set value to someothervariable's value. would be nice to at least make the distinction between tekst and variables explicit. combine that with the brilliant sr_br_naming_tx_conventions_plt and you have a good recipe for heart attack!
yessssssssss
I'm forced to work with Typo3 and I think is a totally shit, boring, hard to find documentation, it has no forums, only an old-style list as old as the entire CMS!! Extensions are old and they are in beta!
I think those that make me work with typo3, should try it and would see it's not as fantastic as said in specifications. It's very easy to create features without fixing bugs!
Typo3 is utter crap. I can't even fathom why people are using it. It just makes everything worse. Vanilla spaghetti PHP from the 90ties is more maintainable that this shit.
I HATE YOU TYPO3
GMENU doesn't have wrapItemAndSub, yes?
WHY ON EARTH?
Let me tell you this, dear GMENU developers:
Y O U A R E I D I O T S
STOP POLLUTING THE WORLD WITH YOUR SHIT IDEAS
k ... me again!
beware of comments in TsConfig!
/* My Comment */
DOES NOT WORK
/*
MY Comment
*/
WORKS
That just cost me a few hours ...
FUCK TYPO3.
Stay away fron this.... It takes alle the fun out of creating websites. Old docs, complicated installation, ect.
Two words - STAY AWAY!!!
frustration.
yes, typo3 is a huge pile of shit, but it's not german shit it't danish shit founded by Kaspar Skaarhoj.
But unfortunately a lot of german so called developpers are using crap.
Yeah I've been using for some time now @ my job and I HATE it...
Documentation, tutorial, example, well... everything lack! I can't find anything to help me on the web and even less on their website... :(
I believe Jesus had an easier task carrying his cross on the hill than us, trying to work with this nightmare.
facebook group "i hate typo3" would be nice .. to keep the children away from evil..
TYPO3 - your father should have jerked you off in a glass, instead of fucking with the computer to make you
thanks for all the poor souls who suffered to make typo3 better, thanks for the extensions, thanks for trying...
if it had a better documentation, maybe it would be worth it..this way, useless
Yeah I had a very nice offer to finish up a site that another developer had created in TYPO3. Simple enough, I thought: I know PHP, I've created a dozen websites and a couple simple frameworks myself. Shouldn't be more than a few hours of work.
Fast forward to three weeks later. I have made virtually no headway on the TYPO3 project despite having invested at least 40 hours attempting to comprehend not only TYPO3, but the travesty of syntax that has been left by the former developer (and induced by TYPO3's idioms).
I am completely baffled by the existence of TypoScript -- a language for which there is not only no reason for its existence (what's wrong with reusing something like Javascript for the job??) -- but the syntax itself is completely ass-backwards!
TypoScript is full of gems like this:
yacbddm.10.3 < yacbddm.10.2
IFSUB=1
IFSUB {
wrapItemAndSub = <li> | </li>
ATagParams = class="firstlevellink topmenul1-ifsub"
}
WTF?
In short it seems to me somebody decided that Javascript/HTML/CSS weren't up to the job of rendering web pages, and ended up producing a vastly more convoluted, impenetrable and hamfisted language instead.
I ended up having to regretfully abandon the job after having produced no work for my client. And I don't consider myself to be a stupid coder.
TYPO3 is an abomination. I literally searched for "typo3 sucks" on Google just to post this.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! What a loss of time!!!
Never again will I setup aCMS without looking through the source code.
Recently found out our security scanner wasn't detecting Typo3 security problems and that we were affected by TYPO3-SA-2009-002 (allows an attacker to read arbitrary files that the apache user has access to).
I can understand that sometimes critical security flaws happen - even if this one was retarded - but I thought I'd have a look at the code. Big mistake. I'm scared to have this running on my server
Small example: ./sysext/cms/tslib/class.tslib_fe.php is over 4 thousand lines long, mixing html, php and javascript with impunity. And is one of the least cohesive examples of code I've seen.
Heh, I've just seen a comment saying T3 is:
* Good, because it's mature
* Unfortunately maturity = mess
* But it's OK because the FLOW3 based v5 will be completely re-written.
What a joke!
The hierarchical pages with arbitrary root pages for multiple sites, templavoila, built in scripting capability and actually quite allot of other ideas really have merit. It's a shame that it literally collapses under the weight of it's own arse.
And what the hell were they smoking when they designed typoscript?
I feel raped and abused!
I wonder how much wheel-reinvented crap Flow3 will provide the poor souls with.
The reason so many of you are having so many problems is that you just don't understand what TYPO3 is. It is an ENTERPRISE level content management framework. It's not designed to knock up a site in ten minutes. It is specifically aimed at very skilled development teams. I have been using it for 18 months now and the first few months frustrated the hell out of me. Now I can knock up any website design into TYPO3 in the same time I can do a static site. Other enterprise level CMS software includes Vignette Story server (uses TCL as it's configurational language) and Microsoft Sharepoint Server 2007 (I did a MSTE course in this and it was hard work). Both of these require just as much training and technical skill to develop in as TYPO3. Why does everyone associate open-source CMS with ease of use?
The bottom line is that anything worth doing is hard work. This is true for learning new software. The rewards eventually pay off. I was lucky enough to be working for a company at the time that could afford to invest so much money in me learning TYPO3 (I'd reckon that the first few websites I did with it took at least 5 times longer than it would have normally taken me. Now I am developing a system the scale of Tesco Clubcard for a client that utilises LDAP authentication, outlook integration, e-commerce and various bespoke extensions to provide sales data to the client. If even possible in Drupal this would take just as much effort as for TYPO3.
from the typo3 core documentation:
"The "operator" "||" (double-vertical line) is a part of a very complex concept called "optionSplit". The concept is more confusing than a missing file on a Windows-installation so be careful if you start playing with it. Personally I always refer to the examples in the TSref. See the discussion below."
very explainative docs
arhghghggh... 4.3.0 version is damn creepy buggy shit, total anti user interface... seems fucked up beyond comprehension, it's written in web's dark ages and it's totally backward piece of shit!!
ooohhh this helped me :D
I'm a dumb using TYPO3. And I'm really glad that you guys hate TYPO3 because in my region, TYPO3 developers are overpaid due to the lack of TYPO3 devs. Having TYPO3 on your CV is much more valuable than having Joomla or Drupal...
Having used computers since the mid-eighties and holding a PhD in computer science, I was really, really impressed by Typo3's user interface.
Because this is by far the most unusable, counter-intuitive, long-winded, and confusing piece of software that I've ever seen. And that even includes Debian's old and nightmarish dselect tool.
Even the simplest actions, such as editing the text of a page, requires you to perform a sequence of clicking on thousands of buttons, before you finally will see the edit window. If you're new to Typo3, it will take you ages before you find out how to do this.
If someone had wanted to create a CMS with a user interface that negates any and every advice from disciplines such as usability, interface design, or cognitive ergonomy, he couldn't have done better.
I worked with it for two months - I wanted to use for a mid-size company website with some special functions and an online shop - I didn't really have a clue about web programming at that time but since I'm a computer science senior and I'm familiar with all sorts of programming languages I was sure I'd figure it out - I WAS WRONG!!!! - THIS GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHITTY CRAP SOFTWARE STOLE 2 MONTHS OF MY LIFE!!!! DON'T USE IT!!!! DON'T EVEN DOWNLOAD IT!!YOU'RE COMPUTER WILL EXPLODE BECAUSE IT CAN'T HANDLE SO MUCH SHIT!!!
Bande de noobs ! Go vous pendre avec vos CMS de farce.
Typo3 is the best CMS Framework I've ever used.
And it's not German, ignorant !
I am german and I am offended by bringing that weird spaghetti coded piece of shit called typo3 in relation with german developers. It is danish crap hacked together by a reliolus bonehead. Sitz typo3 they did everything wrong and violated all good coding manners. Using classes as function containers. A file with more than 1000 lines of code is far away from being clean coded. Typo3 is a big piece of stinking christian shit.
I have been working with this bloated piece of shit for months and still have to look up how which kind of import that I have to do to get a fucking image out of my resources. Really the most unintuitive motherfucker I have ever used. And don't let me get started on the fucking poorly indexed fucking out of fucking alphabetical order documentation. Do you do this on purpose you fucking shit eaters! I hate you sooooo much. I may quit my fucking job because of this fucking fuck typo3 shit.
I just got a prospect for a job with typo3... I've been really digging codeigniter (although not really a CSM). After clicking on the help documentation directly in the interface of the typo3 admin section and have NOTHING work regarding links I checked the online documentation.
After finding that nothing in the interface was matching from the version that I installed to the screen caps in the tutorials I noticed that the images were of ie5 and a 2002 build of mozilla! I decided to take a look at the videos instead... only to find that they ranged anywhere from 2004 to 2007... I understand that a lot of this is opensource but is there any chance of having recent and updated documentation?
Typo3 is the pain in the ass of any ambitious web developer!
If you need a free cms for small or medium sites you better take joomla, drupal or maybe TypoLight.
my 50 cents ...
Typo3 framework is not perfect but it is quite powerful and extensible in the right hands and is used to power some big corporation sites.

If not handled properly then Typo3 can seem like hard work but with the proper planning, Typo3 can create flexible websites that goes beyond basic blog sites where scripts like Wordpress are not adequate.

The typo3 code is a real mess. Not only the code is bloated, also the interface. The interface "design" is from the early days. I call it Windows 3.11 cms/sites, the ones with animated gifs and ugly colors and tables. Old style php (beginners level) with all stuff mixed (php, html, javascript etc. No templates! Also old html (not W3C) but you can't change it easily because there are no templates. code is php 4 or earlier stuff.
I have installed once, to many options, ugly interface (but doesn't mean it is bad when it is functional) but has no logic, it's a mess of options. Less white space, it is designed to fit on 800x600 displays, full screen ;-). Using every pixel on a 800x600 display ;-)
It is not user friendly. See the difference in interface design when you compare it to ModX.
Also, the code is a mess, turn on error reporting E_ALL, it's really bad.
I will believe it's still working for some guys, but come on guys, move on or leave the market and go washing disches.
Today it's all about classes, reusing code, make it efficient, fast, maintainable, independent and the output W3C. If you not do it this way today, please leave this planet and take all the mess with you.
Typo3 is for "programmers" that starting programming as hobbyist and don't know anything about structure and planning.
PHP is a nice language but you can do very nasty things. Before starting with PHP start programming in pascal or Delphi.
As somebody said before: TYPO3 is used by people who is afraid of hardcore PHP. I agree with that.

Erwinus
im stuck too with typo3 for one of our clients and just came in here to say that it fuckin sucks ass.
for those few people in here claiming typo3 is actually very good and powerful once you climb up the initial brick wall, i seriously can't imagine any of you have had any experience in any other CMS post 2000.
cause if you have, you're either not a programmer (hence, your comments can be dismissed) or you are still stuck in 1995 and think procedural programming is the shit and have no idea what so ever about application architecture and design.
i've used many cms's, and i can't even say i'm a big fan of drupal. i encourage everyone to try out concrete5. it's easily the best cms out there both for customers and developers (and designers) imo.
fuck typo3 and the people behind it with their fuckin half assed 5th grade level english and overall amateurism.
This is some funny stuff, the frustration is beyond funny. There is no other page driven cms out there that even can compare to the power of typo3. You guy's just don't know how to use that. So go suckit! and spend your time building your own cms or start using joomla. p.s. don't use drupal to, to much to handle for you guys to..

TYPO3 SUCKS GODDAMN ASS!! :@
TYPO3 doesn't completely suck... it just needs to be rewritten. And documented. In English.
Oh what awful documentation. I went through the 'quickie' tutorial. I had to search the net to solve most of the problems in the documentation. Its all very old, full of dead links. Most of its wrong. I went through the next document 'modern template building'. It went ok, but the next one 'part 2 and 3' are wrong. There is an extension telling you that document '2&3' is wrong, but you don't find that out in '2&3'. So much for a 'friendly' learning curve. Even the manual for the extension is wrong. (more dead links, more wrong information --whole sections stale or just plain wrong--). I think all the documentation is wrong. If the documentation is any indication of the code quality, RUN! RUN FROM THIS! Save yourself. Its an abomination! Its a disaster!
I worked for a company that uses it, unbeliavable, there was no extension for tag definition. It took me two working days to develop a feauture already available in WP. TYPO3 sucks
honestly, why using typo3 if you can have a commercial (professional) enterprise CMS for the same money that it costs to customize typo3?
typo 3 - there is no point at all
and...
don't turn down WordPress or Joomla,
they are still good systems to create pages
for organizations, personal sites, and small
to mid companies...
Simple wordpress plugin: 1 file, 1 function.
Simple Drupal module: 2 files, 3 lines of configuration and 2 functions.
Simple Typo3 extension (plugin): 11 files, too many lines of configuration, a handful of class::method calls, a subclass, its method, attributes that seem to have to exist, junk that the parent class should do in the constructor ($this->conf = $conf;)... roooar I don't even know how much more! I hope I don't have to find out once this project is finished!
7 days ago i installed typo3, installation approximately 10 minutes.
HELLO WORLD! approximately 1 minute.
Get rid of HELLO WORLD!, 4 days, reading crappy manuals.
Then finally, THE only correct way to deal with typo3 == rm -r *
Bye bye typo3, never ever again, never!
And don't forget to drop the typo3 mysql database.
What a loss! Such a brilliant programmer!
Who are you anyway.
I have been working with computers since the 1990s, and I have a PhD in computer science (networking). Of all the software big and small that I have seen during all that time, Typo3 is by far the one with the worst user interface: It is unintuitive, complicated, confounded, hard to understand, and hard to remember how things are done. After having copied the page of a colleague, it took me more than 15 minutes to change my name. In the end, I had to ask a Typo3 expert. This is worse than Debian's old ineffable dselect tool by many orders of magnitude!
where is documentation?
I love typo3
I work with many systems from very, very, veeeeeery, old computers and I know all computer softwares, programming code (even Lisp,Forth,C,PHP all versions-guy, if You know what is that, of course ;-) )
Now, I am 48 old school with PhD etc. many high-diplomas and I have >many projects (including programing in raw code for some big companys, military "ENTERPRISE" intranet and extranet, etc.)
I testing all CMS on planet.
You must try (>typo-guys) to understand what is really "Typo3"(!)
For me, this CMS so ugly and frustrated in any areas, even in TABS, installation is totally not functional and have maaaaany QA in first install! inside typo is OLD programming code and mixing all craps what I see in last 20 year in programming codes I mean early 80s and that is for me back to history, if you understand what I mean.
Typo is slooooow on any side.
If you try to learn typoscript, better solution for you: not even try, take gun and kill yourself first! Typoscript have naive musk for programmers who really knows job in raw programming PHP etc. and that not even language! I see that, sorry.
Put questions for yourself: How time I have for frustrating and loosing my gold time with typing in typoscript? ...10 days? or 10 months for simple command? Hmmm, no thanks, I try everything in typo3 and that is totally wrong piece of software, even for expert programmers!
Even I try to understand why is typo have that "unstructured structure"-I cannot found answer for that, because this is wrong in any aspect!
58.7Mb instruction package possible for me to shrink in more simple code to about only 15-20 Mb! That is true. Typo programmers >have not< right experience with structuring inside optimising code.
For me typo is not quality software! Wrong code for interpreting commands and customising many other things. Heh, I try something, even fastest DragonflyCMS >have< superior security and great code 100 miles from typo! And from others far away from ozone, that is about several hundreds from Earth! Typo have not even that basic fundamental principles-on Earth.
Or underground?
Future for this software is not good. Many extensions (98%!) is in alpha and beta fases. Many "stable" releases not work properly even if you changed some commands inside extensions. Many bugs in user and administration sides. What can I say for Typo now?
For my very loooong and professional experience typo3 maybe good when come to name typo7 or 8.
If You try start to work in typo-good luck!
But 1st....>forget your wife, child, cat or dog for next 2-5 lost years! And finnaly take your gun and ... You know :,((
Catch this?? :-)
Or You ignore my very extensive professional experience?
God luck, but with some better piece of >really good software<.
I laughed for half an hour reading all these comments.
Most of you guys need to find another job. Probably selling flowers. Programming is not for you. I have some newbies fresh out of high school who managed to learn TYPO3 just in about one month and you brag about your PhD's years of experience with software and you can't manage this ?
Then don't post it here to make an ass of yourselves.
TYPO3 fucked me up, i'm trying since 2 weeks to work with but it only fucked up my head. Im going crazy, the fucking click click click and the pissing slow browser fucked up my ass like a fagot in an russian jail. I`l go better to lern Ruby than fucking up my dick with this fucking TS.
Over and Out
Man I hate Typo3... Grrrr it's a classical example of software mega-bloat. Typo3 tries to be everything for everyone and that's just plain impossible... It's total fucking configuration over convention like it's 1992... I invested lot of time learning it just to discover it's a haphazard pile of shit. I mean... creating a new obscure script language for templates when you already know PHP... It is the work of the devil since it tricks you into using it, it makes false promises and you need an exorcist to migrate your data out of it...
I know you get what you pay for, but the support you get with Typo3 is a piece of shit.
one of the whole reasons of extensions is to supposedly take care of a lot of the coding for you. but the extension manuals give you such a shitty explanation on how to use them and hardly any reference material.
if I try to look for help in some online forum it's either in German, or there's some cryptic quasi-explanation that leaves me with even more questions, or if there's something which *does* address my confusion then it no longer applies because it refers to some outdated version!
all the while I would've probably better spent my time coding said extension from scratch
What a lame list of loosers here. I guess that is what happens if you are a unenployed drupal, joomla or wordpress dev. hope you all wank your self to death!
When i saw an article on internet, named: "Typo3 vs Joomla", i didn't expect, that Joomla will score lower than Typo3. (If you want u can find this article on Google, just type: “Typo3 vs Joomla” )
The scores were:
Joomla = 6.5
Typo3 = 8.0
After that i have decided to try typo3 out.
Well, when i saw the first page of the installation tool, i knew already what kind of problems this CMS has and will have.
Yes, maybe this CMS is stable and has more security, but come on, Usability is also important. This CMS does not have it at all. I did not expect that an installation of a CMS system can give you so much pain in the ass.
Because of Typo3, I know now how much I love Joomla.
Considering how long ago Typo3 was first developed and how long it's been in deployment, the amount of bugs it has, the horrible and sometimes nonexistent documentation of its manuals, the grossly inadequate support system, and the utter lack of standards and consistence in extension implementation are completely *inexcusable*.
Those sort of issues are what you'd expect from a newly developed piece of software, not something that's been around for about a decade.
ay ay ay it's horrible...
Its not that its bad... It is that its soooo bad it makes children cry!!!
With the power given to you by even some of the simpler open source cms's you can do anything thing you want if you are a good developer. I mean wordpress has multisite already ffs! No need for "Enterprise" piece of crap. If you know it already gg, but why learn something like typo if you can already use php :/
I use TYPO3 and I hate it. Documentation is really bad, you can't rely on most extensions because most of them need you to be a programmer able to add missing parts you need. Extension structure is very old - one long main file. Why I use it - because it is possible to do many things with it and I hope I become better programmer with using this not perfect framework :-). BTW - I would not call TYPO3 a CMS - it is essentialy a framework with visual backend. I think people expect it to be a WYSIWG CMS and when they see it - they blame it.
I DO believe this piece of software has been made to challenge anybody's patience.
In the same amount of time needed to understand its specific logic, anybody would master Php !
Compared to Joomla, Wordpress or even Dreamweaver, Typo3 just looks like a joke. And a big waste of my time. "De la merde" as we say in French
Just reading this page has reminded me of the Typo3 hell I was in 4 years ago.
I can still remember the weeks spent updating template almost pixel by pixel.
And then the shop module. What a crock of shitola!
In retrospect I could have built the client a CMS from scratch that would have met their reqs in half the time as trying to figure out this pedantic peice of crap!
3 years later I rebuilt the site for one of these clients in Wordpress - took me half a day
I love Typo<3
I love TYPO3 !!!
Well, I hate it...
10 years of programming experience in C++, C#, ObjC, Java/JEE and PHP3/4/5. Never have I seen such a crappy product causing so many headaches made by people living in their own fantasy world of software architecture and programming.
And if T3 itself isn't causing enough headache, just use one of the publicly available plugins. Security issues and nights of integration headache guaranteed!
This product caused me actual physical issues, hours of overtime and loss of sleep. Not to say, companies who sell this product dont really care what they're selling as long as it sells.
Please do not bust the "choice of professionals" bubble by pointing to other solutions or maybe hints like "wouldnt a well documented and serviced drupal or joomla be plenty enough for my site?"
Plenty "typo3 professionals" would lose their base of income. And what interest would they have in providing a good tutorial, once they have figured out their way through the badlands of usability? New competitors? DIY customers? aww, go away!
TYPO3 is great!
A new (German) client came to me with their Typo3 site wanting an email form.
No problem I thought! It's PHP so it can't be that hard! *laughs*
But then 4 hours later and I still can't get the Mailformplus extension to do ANYTHING. Fukkit.
AND WHY WOULD ANY ENTERPRISE LEVEL APPLICATION BE SO FULL OF ACRONYMS!?
Also, notice there are many more haters than defenders here, or are they all busy writing good code and documentation? Or learning proper PHP and real CMSs? No, probably not.
Whoever created this as an April's Fools joke deserves a god damn Nobel prize! Excellent fun reading all you trolls who could make a better CMS with your dicks in your own mouths and one half of your brain tied behind your asses.
I love you, trolls! And your awesome skills =)
a meta-troll! we need to go deeper..
AAAAh! place is for cowards and people who like to nag, complain who are afraid of trying out new stuff, and those who never finish work anywhere! typo3 is not your magic bullet. Its for people who like to work. Its the future. Huge corporations use typo3! try Airbus.com, Lufthansa, Mercedes and others. Welcome to this page if you are a sissy!
How can Typo3 be the future if it's so ass-backwards?
What? Who removed my entry? This is a scam...
What a bunch of losers. If you're not up to this go and find some other job because IT is not for you.
THAAAAAAAANKS I'm not alone!
Bothered beyond belief!!!! Trying to customize tt_news...
OK, the main problem with typo3 is
- the crappy backend
- complicated configuration
- TypoScript (why not just stay with PHP from the beginning?)
Generally, it just sucks if you need to be a complete specialist just to work with a CMS.
I am actually earning very good money developing and maintaining TYPO3 sites (...admitted: In Germany). I understand it's complicated when you first start with TYPO3, but no doubt it's very flexible and versatile.
I can't understand the big frustration of people who where actually working with it - because by now I can set up a fully designed TYPO3 site with some popular extensions within 1 or 2 days, no hassle. And from version 4.4, the first start became a lot easier.
Because the german speaking users are the majority, there aren't so many english support forums - that might be one reason for many people getting stuck with technical problems. (I actually found out that on Stackoverflow, there is a very active TYPO3 community)
I am also keeping my eyes open permanantly for a less complicated but similar powerful CMS, but I haven't found one yet.
I've been using Typo3 since 2006 and find that it's very easy complaining about it ... and quite difficult not to.
Typo3 is a godsend for consultants
who are seeking a golden goose
to pump a free-flowing
deluge of money
It is custom engineered to require
gobs of 3rd party help to maintain
and grow a website
lovely rube goldbergian
I've been using typo3 back in 2003 for 6 months and I hated it so much that it still rings in my ears when I think of it. Well, now what happened is that my friend told me she still has to use it in her company to update a corporate website with content. I couldn't believe that this piece of shit is still around, went googling and found this page.
All I can say is that it's better to be jobless than having to program typo3. The only good thing about it is that it is the best example out there of how NOT to do stuff. I believe the core designers have mental illness problems, or at least they are very stupid and masochistic.
Go for Python / Django for some fresh air. At least do a basic tutorial on their site and you will see what modern web development is all about.
Simply put, Typo3 is a racket. I am stuck here with Typo3 for next couple of months. I have 25 years of professional experience I do agree that it is a waste of money in the several projects I have seen, but could pay off if the project required hundreds of plugins. However, for the medium level projects I am involved with, the system is overly complex and the resulting time spent is way more that it would be in another system. I am working in a German company and Germans love unnecesary complexity, but since they have money to throw away on complexity, here I am. Germans are smart and can program, but they make everything so complex that in the end they are much slower than their anglican counterparts. Typo3 is a result of this kind of faulty thinking. It is taking me weeks to produce something that would normally take a day with just PHP and not these templates. I feel like I am stealing money to sit here reading incredibly horrible documentation and program the most mundane things.
Lol! Man u guys are all retards and incompetent programmers!
I agree with the last comment... You are really a bunch of helpless retards! If you can't work with this CMS go do some basic HTML. It will probably be to your level of expertise.
Hey dude with the 25 years of experience go back to work with Cobalt and leave the real stuff to the pros
Cobalt is a chemical. I think COBOL is the language you are trying to say, but then if you like Typo3 then I wouldn't expect you to be too smart about languages other than TS.
I know ADVANCED HTML, but Typo3 has crappy HTML that I can't edit, sprayed through it everywhere.
I think he was talking about the company Cobalt
http://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/Cobalt or if u prefer Cobalt Networks!
Advanced HTML? You mean HTML5? My 10 year old kid is making websites with that! So good for you to know a great big hard language like that.
I so not like TYPO3 because too big! I go into CMS and everything is big! I play with CMS and I am big
Wow, you guys are going wild.
I think TYPO3 does a good job of being a enterprise grade CMS that remains very customizable.
The fact that the language and structure are hard to master does not make it a bad system, just a complex one.
I agree.
The top CMS (TYPO3, Drupal, Joomla, ...) are all good but just made for different types of people and needs.
Indeed TYPO3 is really a good CMS once you have taken the time to learn it well!
Are you telling me that if I don't like TYPO3 and think its a useless CMS full of crap I am a just a bad programmer and a retard! If so, I agree with you!
I am an ADVANCED HTML programmer because I can open the source code of my IE and I think that when work with WORD I am a programming
I also know ADVANCED HTML! Also known as XHTML 1.0, because I love Microsoft and I don't know that XHTML doesn't exist anymore. TYPO3 doesn't know XHTML like me because TYPO3 is not a person. I am not a robot.
I love fish!
I love TYPO3
Yay! Me too! Best website ever to promote TYPO3! cheers mate!
I just can't wait for the 5.0 version I hear it's gonna be awesome!
I am here to promote peace in the world! Is this the right website to do it? I am new to the internet just came back from the Fiji islands and internet just didn't exist there
ADVANCED HTML is not XHTML! Eveyone knows its DHTML! Viva la revolution!
@Djangonaut
I was using "the car" back in 1950 I hated it so much that it still rings in my ears when I think of it. Well, now what happened is that my friend told me she still has to use a car to go around. I couldn't believe that this piece of shit is still around, went googling and found this page.
All I can say is that it's better to be carless than having to drive. The only good thing about it is that it is the best example out there of how NOT to do stuff. I believe the core designers have mental illness problems, or at least they are very stupid and masochistic.
Ok! I still use the big TYPO3! Me don't see big things with wrong! I be hard on the workang! I be good and listen to the turorials! Now I be hard so nice! I believe to be so hard is to be soft in the hard. I now dance so nice when I feel inside me. I good to this be am to the me! YES! It is the TYPO3 for the hard and soft! I know be now it is very ok to be! I happy and hard! If you need helping I be hard with helping you! You just look me and I be happy to!
okay, before typo3 version 5.0 gets released which seems to be a complete rewrite and new peace of software i would take the oppurtunity to rant about all other version i had the "pleasure" to work with all the past
years. (dont get me wrong, Im trying to be objective here so im not saying that 5.0 is a game changer, i just havent looked at it yet).
From a professional programmers and webdesigners perspective i would say it never was a tool that makes my job easier and i do believe that a CMS should
make not only the content-providers job easier, but also mine. YES, a CMS should make anyone involved lifes easier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so typo3 did
quit the opposite, it made the easiest things become a timeconsuming and frustrating task. i never wrapped my mind around the necessety of typoscript,
even for the simplest things you need to use a few lines of typoscript and why on earth should i use this twisted crippled scripting language when i could
use PHP directly where i dont have a learning curve anymore, but a scriptlanguage inside a scriptlanguage ??? duh ?????
Why do i even need typoscript to include a template, yes, i know most typo3-lovers this statement will make you chuckle, but seriously, i installed
that much typo3-bloat on the server and even to pick a template for a site i need to do this via typoscript ??? STUPID !!! so the only thing that made
using typo3 all the years bareable was the fact: i reuse things again and again so i dont need to use that typoscript shit again and again, if most typo3-lovers
now say: "what are you crying than, thats the way to do it", guess what, in a REAL CMS all the things that are used again and again come with a simple mouseclick, having a template is common and applies to all websites, having a menu as well etc., if i have to spent that much time to setup all the things up once i could as well spent all the time writing my own CMS which btw isnt the hardest thing, the hardest
part would be the WYSIWYG-editor and as we all know all of the CMSs out there use the same FCKeditor or TinyMCE anyway including typo3.
sir i am web development bangalore from india
.
sir i love typo3
.sir
thpo3 is very good language sir
First off all, I use all other CMSs and that all can't compare with Typo3.
Some people says about typoscript...
Typoscript is NOT scriptlanguage! You are completly wrong. Typoscript is configuration language/script, whatever you want.
Well, for any case, try for ex. in Joomla have more User Groups (64!)and many different languages(16)...Yea? No?
Thats the point... and try to comapre Typo3 and "others" after 1000 pages (minimum) of your sites! Typo3 shine !
Well, I not hate Typo3. I hate people who tell non-argumented facts about different systems in this case, CMSs. People have not time for learn and I understand that, but if you need monster CMS, thats sure Typo3. Thats only your choice whatyou want and what you need.
Before talking about typoscript you script-kiddies should try to understand what an abstraction layer is and why it's there.
Otherwise just hack php in drupal and spend your nights with desperately trying to update it. Have fun!

This is one of the funniest blogs i've ever seen.
FUCK YOU TYPO3 !!!
what is this "language" called typoScript WTF!?!??
fucked off docs, stupid community and all "configuration" overhead etc...
for every small piece u have to use TS !?!?!?
FUCK YOU TYPO3 !!!
this list by itself demonstrate the power of TYPO3 ... other words are useless...
Well Drupal, Wordpress and joomla is for code monkeys... PHTML crap! If you now PHP it issent hard to work with Typo3.
TYPO3 4.7.0
Tried installing on unix server.
Could not get past the installation tool. Apparently, some idiot thought it would be good to have joh316 as default password to start the installation process. SERIOUSLY?? JOH fucking what??
Anyhow, used a shortcut to have the password in the url to get to the installation page.
Obviously, no database connection. Filled in username and password but what's the use? Goes round in circle - back to the installation tool page that does not even know who joh316 is.
After 6 solid hours trying numerous ways to find a workaround, trying the different 'flavours' I declare this TYPO3 4.7.0 and all versions to come TOTAL JUNK.
As a side note, it seems to me there's much vested interest by TYPO3 to have you get paid help from one of their 'consultants'
No wonder there are so many bugs.
Keep up the good work scammers.

I don't like the personal attacks that people are making above, but just want to add that I can't see why people would use Typo3 when Drupal and WordPress are available.
Typo3 is not intuitive. Drupal and WordPress have their own limitations and problems, but they are vastly more intuitive.
I've inherited a large Typo3 site, and I could migrate it to WordPress or Drupal in less time than it would take to learn Typo3, with no loss of functionality. Actually, functionality would be improved in terms of ease of updating templates and SEO.
Typo3 Certified == Content manager
Documentation is crap, a lot of books and documents contradict each other.
There website always seem to have a lot of bugs in it... (that says something.)
Record percentage on poorly developed extensions compared to other platforms.
1001 ways to setup typo3, some call it flexability... Guess again!
The Typo3/Flow3 community hates pretty much everything else.
Zend Framework, Symfony, Cake PHP, (PHP?) everyone agrees its shitty, really i thought it to be great? :S
Typoscript... should i say anything more? It doesnt secure code, it doesnt help you reading it. So what does it do to help your php project???
Old php technology will stun or intimidate the 500+ typo3 veterans i learned to know. Biggest example would be the usage of IDE's like Eclipse, Netbeans etc.
Invented technology within typo3, normal for example a zf certified engineer like myself. Seems to be ignored and not forced upon.
Good example will be the usage of ORM within extension development.
Or another one of a lot of hacked websites do to SQL injection :S
Prepare to shit yourself by the fealing of being overqualified for typo3. Especially without the use of exbase, it really gives you the fealling of something really immature...
etc.etc.
wow, I mean - wow
The length of this list speaks for itself I guess :). I also have to work with Typo3 and I feel like it's a totally waste of my time. Even the most simple thing can take forever to implement, I won't comment the idea behind TypoScript (for the love of god, why?!). Overall it's huge, it's bulky, it's just not so pro and enterprise as the authors says on their homepage.
It's a shame that a lot of developers have to deal with that crap because some genius decided to use this CMS few years ago and now it's practically impossible to migrate to something else and so we code surrounded by this stock of wrappers and useless pile of functions.
Greetings to all of you Typo Haters! ;-)
Yeah right...
You upgrade to TYPO3 4.5 only to discover that PHP_SCRIPT or any kind of TypoShit -- excuse me, TypoScript -- includes DO NOT WORK ANYMORE.
FILES ARE NOT INCLUDED ANYMORE AND THERE IS NO APPARENT FUCKING SOLUTION.
SO ONCE AGAIN
F U C K TYPO3
The codebase of Typo3 is ridiculous. No serious programmer will ever love/support this "enterprise" CMS. Oh well, Typo3 is mainly driven by so called "Typo3 agencies" (particularly in Germany) which mostly have an advertising background – not an IT background. Moreover, Typo3 is funded by this people.
But: they noticed that Typo3 is fundamentally unprofessional. So they started the Flow3 project years ago – now available. Flow3 is a modern PHP framework and a new and refreshed Typo3 (called "Phoenix" or just no. "5" or whatever) uses this framework. Maybe at the end of 2012 a first version of Typo3 Phoenix is available. The old style Typo3 will be continued also.
So, what does this mean to the future?
Is the Typo3 community capable of dealing with an underlying modern PHP framework? Maybe, there will be two kinds of Typo3 programmers: those who really have a deep understanding of PHP capabilities, and those who stick to typoscript.
Developing apps in TYPO3 has something sexual in it ... It feels like being raped by whole TYPO3 core team every day !
Lol... use your brain .... then you understand TYPO3 ;)
Some twitts from Salvatore Sanfilipo (creator of Redis) that immediately made me think of Typo3:
"there is definitely a strong correlation between code quality and documentation quality IMHO"
https://twitter.com/friedcell/status/227734978866339840
"nothing is more offensive than a complex API. It's like to say you: because I can't handle complexity, study this 50 pages to make a call."
https://twitter.com/antirez/status/213911761638793217
Whoever who has programmed in Rails will understand the pleasures of fantastic doc and a simple-to-use and well-thought framework, in contrast to the overcomplexity and extended but poor and broken documentation of Typo3.
It is very much as big a pile of crap as it could be. Especially if you have to take over a system that is years old and has not been maintained. There is no documentation nowhere to be found. Multiple caches, TemplaVoila or none, 6 different versions on 10 different sites, with 6 different installations. Always having to pin point if it is part of the template or the static of the template or one of the extensions or part of the typoscript for any of the pages, and if it i happens to be in several, which is the one that sets the last result (taken a eg. constant or variable) ? User friendly ? Nice to the eye (Backend or Frontend) ? NADA, nothing. Never had to develop and maintain anything more annoying. On top of it, its full of mistakes. Best spare yourself of anything like it. That is one little advice from me. Nice to have this list :)
Just tested the last demo of typo3 Phoenix (sprint 9).
Well, the demo site is terrible slow. Nothing works as aspected. To be precise: this is far from working solution.
I really doubt, Phoenix will ever get finished.
It is no fun to develop a website. Why on earth should everything have an interface which is complicated as hell, and a TypoScript which has no logic and its grammar is so confusing?
I am so retarded... I cannot do TYPO3. omg this is soo hard because i am use to work with some .NET and now i have to work with something that is builded with more than 5 minutes of thinking behind and it doesn't work as badly as the crappy stuff that I am used to work with so I come and shout out loud that I am a retarded and that I will never have children because it would only cause the world the become even more full of retarded because I would teach my child to be as retarded as and use only retarded stuff that never works and critisize everything that I don't understand and can't work with because I that more than half a brain to use it... I'm so sad right now that I can't use TYPO3 because I don't know what is PHP and how it works
I have to say the TYPO3 is the WORST CMS system that I have ever used. I wouldn't describe myself as a professional web developer but I have worked with a variety of private and open source softwares, and CMS's, including Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla and Eloqua.
TYPO3 in comparison is counter-intuitive, seemingly outdated, overly complex and very poorly documented.
I merely write this as a warning for anyone looking to use TYPO3. Sincerely, do yourselves a favour and use something else.
-Miguel Antonio
Typo3 is ridiculously robust in file size alone - that's without adding content. The plug-ins are shamefully useless at best, 3/4's of the ones we have tried do not work "out of the box" and need extra coding. From a user point of view, it simply has to be the worst CMS, far to complicated, even for seasoned web developers who may not know much about PHP, but at least have enough of an idea how to navigate ones way around a CMS backend. And I thought Joomla sucked - typo3 takes the cake on all fronts.
To understand GERMAN (TYPO3) product.. Need sharp mind!!! But in this world, people only happy with stupid comment.
so you can create typo3 url link in pi class, but not in sv class (because when you auth someone, there is no need in redirection in any case) ? they are retarded ! total frustration over everything !!!
I Had to post I am working with TYPO 3 or as I call it CRAPO 3. What an awful system, it has to be the crappiest CMS ever made.
And everybody in Austria uses it, it boggles the mind.
basic wordpress setup: 0.5 hours
basic typo3 setup: 8 hours
Typo 3 is mainly used in germany (see google trends) because germans believe that if noone can use a product, it's the users' fault, and the creators must be supersmart, and therefore it must be a brilliant product.
luckily most countries in the world are not that retarded, therefore this crapy piece of shit will disappear over time.
I rather eat shit and have sex with my grandmother than doing an other Typo3-Site.
I think there's no other community in the WWW with such arrogant and unfriendly people. I bet they're all getting bullied by their parents, bosses and little sisters. AND: They totally deserve it!
I gave it a try, found it a really bad experience. Perhaps it was the documentation which is terrible, links that are mostly out of date! I gave up when I read of error messages that were not errors. Oh come on!
If someone involved in Typo3 were to set an average web designer, with no experience in Typo 3, down in front of a computer and monitor how they progress on setting up an average site they may learn a lot from it. Simple things that may be obvious to the experienced user may not be to them. Address the difficulties and you may get more users. With more users, more revenue and more development.
For me, life is too short. Shame for some parts of it I think I could like.
STAY AWAY !!! Let me tell you about my experience with typo3... At first it was ok, I read the documentation and a book called "Mastering typoscript". Everithing was clear and "clever" as i thought for the time being. But then when I started installing extensions in order to expand the functionality of TYPO3, things went WRONG!!! How am I supposed to install a F*CKING extension with only 4 lines of documentation !??!?!?!?!?!?!??! The idea is not to lose a week of your time for something as simple as "adding comments in your post"!!!! For that amount of time you might as well do it manually using PHP !!! F*CK THIS SH*T !!! STAY AWAY !!!!
I just took on a freelance project to create a simple interactive 'Q&A' section to test user's knowledge. I found out that the company uses TYPO3 (never heard of it, but assumed this would extend dev time significantly).
WOW! This is a horrific piece of software. Absolutely terrible. I assumed "as long as I know php, I can do anything in this php cms". How wrong I was!
TYPO3 is a convoluted disgorge of vomit.
The cms is archaic, slow, clunky and a maze;
The 'backend' file structures and archtiectures are bloated and confusing;
TYPOSCRIPT - enough said;
The extensions are terrible - non work! I don't mean that they are just difficult to configure; no, I mean they literally have fatal php syntax errors in them;
The WYSIWYG extension builder is a laughable imitation of microsoft Access;
I am with everyone else that says forget this - and php for that matter. Look to the future of web dev such as Rails or Django instead.
...TYPO3 is a massive pile of DUNG!
I had to work with this monstrum of a CMS for multiple years.
TYPO3 plus TemplaVoila is fine for small websites without special features and if you're lucky, it works out of the box.
But as soon as it gets to programming your own extensions or trying to get to work other extensions, it becomes a nightmare.
What did they take when they invented TypoScript? Seriously, it's not even Turing-complete, and that's the least to expect from a so-called "scripting language".
Typo"Script" is simply a bloated, user-hostile configuration syntax and not a scripting language! It could be replaced by a GUI-based configuration manager. I'd even prefer PHP arrays over TypoScript for configuration!
Trying to learn TypoScript takes twice as much time as trying to learn PHP, and even then it's easier to use PHP to configure stuff.
The extension structure is completely retarded. Seriously, there are I don't know how many files for each extension that are absolutely pathetic. They have some defined function in the TYPO3 logic, but that logic is incompatible with traditional logic. A CMS like Drupal only requires two files - one for making the extension known to Drupal and one with the actual code.
When it gets to programming an extension for TYPO3, it becomes even more retarded. The templating engine is retarded. The most basic and well-understood stuff like trying to query the database requires you to use stupid, badly documented wrapper functions. Also, with each major update (like 4.4 to 4.5) extension compatibility breaks. The changes are not documented anywhere. I spent days trying to fix a misbehaviour in one of my extensions, until I found out that it was actually a TYPO3 bug.
Retarded, retarded, retarded!!! Simply RETARDED!!
And then the arrogant people on the TYPO3 mailing list. Go to hell, you brain-dead bastards! Seriously, go to hell. Nobody will miss you!
The TYPO3 developers would have done the world a favor if they had killed themselves instead of programming this dumb shit of a CMS! GO TO HELL KASPER SKARHOJ! If I ever meet you in public, I will kill you, even if I have to face death sentence for that. You get it? I will KILL you. So you'd better run!
When you have wasted plenty of hours striving to implement the most basic custom view in this utterly falsely-marketed CMS. Reading the comments here helps me process the pain I feel inside. It feels like another fellow programmer has fooled me and violated my dignity :-/
It is interesting to note that so many comments mention mental illness, madness or just plain death. These are themes that spring in to my mind as well, when I recall that Typo3 based project. Never again. And that was friggin' 7 years ago! And the framework UI still looks the same! Aaarhg!
"A grave misunderstanding of what Users and Developers want and need" - this is how I would summarize T3.
whaaa i hate it so much.

Terrible documentation. User unfriendly cms system and very slow compared to other software.
hi
thanks for sharing good job.
Typo3 Development India
I downloaded 'feupload' file manager.
I installed it correctly with the extension manager.
I place the plugin on my page.
no errors, no warnings...
SO WHY!! does it not show up when i test my page?
ITS SO FRUSTRATION!!!!
2 words.
NEVER+AGAIN
After years of TYPO3 Development thousands of hours of pure frustration i finally resumee: TYPO3 sucks.
Im working with this CMS for years now, so the newbie-argument doesn´t count in that case. At first i thought it would be my fault if something didnt work properly from the start...then i got kind of "pot commited" because of the huge amount of work i already invested. big words like "enterprise cms", "out of the box", "thousands of extensions and counting" shouldnt fool you. i hoped so much that newer versions would have less bugs, but the chaos was just rising. The most annoying point is: You nearly always have to fix some shit first, before anything you change will work properly...if you are a "newbie": Try to become an Expert by Coding PHP yourself, not by fixing Problems with that "constant pain in the ass" CMS.
TYPO3 is the best framework under the sun. Documentation is a pain in the neck and the List sucks as well, but it is still the best framework.
I use TYPO3 since the early days and many times I tried to use other CMS's like Drupal or Joomla. No way, all those suck, they are so limited that you feel you are in a cage.
But I agree with all those "anonymous" yelling in desperation and frutration. If you can't deal with TYPO3 go find another CMS.
Cheers
Dan Ferrand
"TYPO3 is the best framework under the sun"
What the hell are you talking about. Anything you want to to in typo3 is complicated for no reason, administration is so confusing that head hurts...
Don't compare typo3 with junk cms like joomla. Yes you can do anything you like in typo3, but is so complicated that is not worth it.
I'm working with modx wich beats typo3 in all fields.
Been working on TypoShit "professionaly" for more than a year now... That's why I quit my job to get a real developper job as this shit is insane and definitely makes you dumb. I like the way they call standards... How many times you heard about the "typoscript standards", wait a minute a standard I've never heard of beeing web developper for more than 5 years... Yeah I see your so called standards... I call it dumb shit assholes... In summary I use to like web dev but typo3 just made me hate it => nowadays I'm quitting web dev thanks to the typo3 team ;)
The most shitty CMS of the world.
Creators must be some retards or what
I hate it because I can't find study materials. Their documents are VERY abstract. God, kill me...
I hate it. I cant work with it anymore. Please, someone take my place... Nothing is working... I turn on one ext and hole site crashdown... I just install ext and site goues down... WTF?
TYPO3 adds so much uneccessary stress into a developers life making time management impossible to maintain as bugs and unexpected hiccups from the way TYPO3 decides to do things differently - way differently. Typoscript - I see the use for it in terms of configuring all your plugins and TYPO3 installation from one page but why use it for Menus and setting up RealURL and setting the site URL and everything that could be done from a form or drag and drop functionality for menu's like in wordpress.
I simply don't get why they make it so code intensive - it's like they're trying to make it complicated to show off their smarts or something. Not cool. I'm leaving TYPO3 behind forever!
shit son, i'm doin this typo3shit for almost 5 years now. i can't believe this motherfucker still needs godzillions of settings to get a page up and running. and when your close to understand all this typoscript/setup/config/pi shit there comes the next motherfucking shit like extbase with mvc everywhere.
dont get me wrong, mvc is surely superior but HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW HOW SHIT IS WORKING WHEN THERE IS NO FUCKING TUTORIAL, GUIDELINE OR MANUALSHIT??? Oh you think you're smart while reverse engineering all sourcefiles of extbase and the typo3-core? BUT I AINT GOT TIME FOR THIS SHIT! I want to make cool websites and either my customers not my users give a shit about MVC or the shit running in the background. They just wan't to have a working website.
So i stay at 4.5 (which is pretty cool) AND I SHIT ON ALL FUTURE VERSIONS!
Oh, before i forget: WORDPRESS has such a beautiful Backend, but when it comes to page-/Contentmanagement it's a pain in the ass! And if you look at drupal and joomla: WHICH FUCKING DRUNK BITCH made the Usability-Checks for the Backend? Are you actual kidding me? Damn!
If you decide to use TYPO3 because of the size of the project use Zend, Symfony, CakePHP or Codegniter instead.
If your project is small use WordPress. WordPress has better spaghetti code power than TYPO3. The main difference is that the WordPress not wasts your time.
I can't see a reason for TYPO3 usage. Most customers use that Shit to annoy me. ;)
Fucking TypoScript, Typo3 and everything related to it!!!! I feel like my life worsen each time I have to touch that monster!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH FUCK Typo3...
but uhh i don't understand the negative comments about drupal and joomla tough (i prefer drupal over joomla), but both in terms of usage and development are way better..
going back to typo3hell (figuring out how to clean up the fuckin mailform.....)
Typo3 ? Enterprise Level CMS ? c'mon guys , have you took a look inside that "core" ?
- it's totally worthless piece of danish shit , cause to render a single page you need to write down typoscript code, that's buggy and have an idiotic way of parse even curly braces!
example: you write page.37{ and go to next line and it's happy but if you write something like page.37 and try to go next line and open { it fails! looser language for looser people!
- you need that idiotic template setup done by typoscript or templavoila etc BUT in TS is a real MESS, and in templavoila editor it FAILS on reporting sections to the right tags, again worthless pieces of shit that modules
- you need to create a full backup and must go on shell and dump all the shit by hands, so say you have to tar the stuff and use low levels commands on mysql etc to fill the GAPS of that stupid environment where nobody created a clean way to backup a full site
- so now suppose you have to do a backup in production and have say 100 editors online connected, what have you do ? block by hands all permissions in the DB for editors during backup ? put the server offline for half an hour ?
PLAIN STUPID APPROACH: an Enterprise Level CMS MUST HAVE a way to backup the whole shit without going offline of messing with the DB and these typo3 fanclub of dumb asses cannot realize such an essential requirement
- say you have to integrate extra functionalities, ok, there are extensions in the main repo BUT of these 6000 something the vast majority are in alpha or beta, just a small part are "stable"
- suppose you install a "stable" ext, and then after messing with repo and ext manager you realize this "stable" ext messed the fuck up on your installation OR simply doesn't do at all what you expect it has to do, I mean reading the docs
have. Drupal has 23.000 something extension and more and a big part are WORKING out of the box, not as in typo3 where you have sometimes to debug and modify PHP code just to print a label, it's a mess developing this way
- say you need documentation... where to find the right one ? you google a lot and end-up with nothing or the instruction for the version 3.6 (dead) , you understand what I mean, it's even more shitty and stinky cause you cannot even find something to read, some stuff is simply UNDOCUMENTED or just in german, but then have you learn also german to use this shit of CMS ?
- wanna talk of typo3 so called "professionals" ? I think you'd better avoid them, lots of money just to make simple stuff you can do in 5 minutes in Drupal or Wordpress or Joomla
- wanna talk of weekly download of this shit ? can't reach 7000 per week now, and Drupal ? it's around 40000 ! and even simple wamp servers hits 100.000 downloads per week! and this piece of crap stay at under 7000 and people call it Enterprise bla bla , SHIT SHIT SHIT , it's SHIT , Enterprise turds
- wanna talk of web statistics on free CMS' usage ? Drupal covers big sites , even uk.gov and the whitehouse use it! and stay at 5.8% of the market now. Typo-shit-a-lot-3 stays at 1.5%, and where ? Germany, Denmark, Nederlands etc, but if you watch at UK , for instance, Drupal owns it from the back!
- wanna talk about efficiency ? made a benchmark on 1000 pages/s on typo3-shit vs drupal and the winner is ? drupal of course! that's about 40% faster in returning pages...
- wanna talk of developers headaches using it ? people RUN after a few weeks of that shit, who have to do it and have no choice blame the day he loaded the backend panel, c'mon
I stop now cause can be a very long list, it's not all that I wrote about this worthless crap stuffed idiotic lump of vomit
and belive me: I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT
For this abomination, you'll go to hell, Kasper...
Fuck this piece of shit spaghetti monster called TYPO3!
…well, where other people have create programming paradigms such as DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) as the opposite of WET (Write Everything Twice), the typo3 creators chose to thoroughly implement the WEALTH paradigm, which stands for "Write Everything At Least Thrice". ARGH! What a waste of time.
I am not a professional nor an expert in web programming, although I am a web developer.
For me, I like Typo3, somehow.. It allows me to be creative with my website. I like how Typo3 gives me the freedom to organize and structure my website. And Typo3 extension: Perfect! I love it! Typo3 provides me the ability to create my own functional features to be integrated with my website with "some degree of freedom"..
Now the problem is: I cannot find a trustable, reliable, accountable, proper, and valid documentation!!! what the hell?? If they say that Typo3 IS an ENTERPRISE CMS, well, they don't look like enterpirse at all without proper and valid documents or tutorials, do they? Are you really?? The documentation and tutorials are worthless to read. Maybe it is better to fire me and hire an external vendor instead.
And get this: I installed Typo3 v.6.1, and try to install extensions. BUGS: Typo3 cannot properly unzip the extension file! I have to edit the core!! Is this really secure CMS?
I know that there are arguments for which CMS is the best.. in my opinion, I don't really care which one is the best, as long as they have proper documentations and tutorials..
Cheers!
